OPT to Day 1 CPT: How to Transfer SEVIS and Minimize the Work Gap

Yes, it is possible to transition from OPT to Day 1 CPT with little or no employment gap, but the timing of your SEVIS transfer and CPT authorization must be carefully coordinated.

When you transfer your SEVIS record to a new school, your OPT employment authorization from your current school ends on the SEVIS transfer release date. Even if the expiration date printed on your EAD is later, you cannot continue working under that OPT authorization after the transfer release date.

To resume employment, your new university must authorize CPT and issue a new Form I-20 showing your approved employer and CPT start date. You may begin working only on or after the CPT start date listed on that I-20.

For this reason, students who want to minimize the OPT-to-Day-1-CPT work gap should coordinate three dates carefully: their last day of OPT employment, their SEVIS transfer release date, and their CPT authorization start date. Depending on the university's CPT processing policy, the gap may range from several days to longer. Some schools allow CPT documents to be reviewed before the SEVIS transfer is completed, which may reduce the gap.

When Does OPT End After a SEVIS Transfer?

 Your OPT does not necessarily continue until the expiration date printed on your EAD. If you transfer your SEVIS record to another school before that date, your OPT employment authorization ends when the SEVIS transfer release takes effect. This makes the transfer release date one of the most important dates to plan when moving from OPT to Day 1 CPT. 

Can Day 1 CPT Be Prepared Before a SEVIS Transfer?

Some universities allow students to submit and review their CPT documents before the SEVIS transfer release date. This can include documents such as an employment offer letter, CPT application forms, academic approvals, and other materials required by the university.

However, this preliminary review is not the same as CPT authorization. The transfer-in school becomes responsible for the student's SEVIS record after the transfer release date, and CPT employment cannot begin until the new school's DSO has authorized CPT and issued a Form I-20 showing the approved employer, CPT dates, and employment authorization.

For students moving from OPT to Day 1 CPT, completing as much of the university's CPT review process as possible before the transfer date may help reduce processing time after the SEVIS record is released.

The timing still needs to be coordinated carefully. OPT employment connected to the previous school ends when the SEVIS transfer release takes effect, while CPT employment can begin only on or after the CPT start date authorized by the new school's DSO. Because university procedures vary, students should confirm the exact process and required documents directly with the transfer-in school's DSO before selecting a transfer date.

Even with CPT pre-approval, you are still only authorized to work based on the "start date" on your CPT I-20, not a single day before. 

The only difference is that staff at these Day 1 CPT universities choose to adapt to your timeline and prepare all necessary documents ahead of time. Some of them even work during weekends, just to make sure their students can get their documents processed on time. The staff will still be reviewing your documents and eligibility, just on an faster timeline. You still have to meet all criteria before they will issue you the official CPT I-20.
