FAQs

What kind of work Can I do by using CPT?

The internship must be an integral part of your academic curriculum and directly relevant to your major field of study. Your Designated School Official (DSO) will evaluate whether your chosen internship aligns with your program. If there is a mismatch, they may suggest exploring alternative programs. To avoid any complications, we recommend consulting with us first to ensure that the program you are considering is the perfect fit for your unique situation. But in general, when applying to Monroe College:

  • If your work is in the STEM field, it is recommended to choose majors like MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, etc.
  • If you work in business or liberal arts, choosing an MBA major is recommended.
How many hours can I work on CPT?

✓ Full-time (40 hours/week) or Part-time (20 hours/week)
✓ On Campus or Off Campus
✓ You may work out throughout the program, though ⬇

! Important Reminder! If you've used full-time CPT for over 12 months, you'll be ineligible for OPT after graduation. However, if you've previously used your master's level OPT before joining Monroe College, this won't be a concern as you're not eligible for OPT at the same degree level again. Monroe College offers doctoral-level Day 1 CPT programs. So, if you're interested in regaining OPT eligibility, consider "leveling up" to a doctoral program instead of pursuing another master's degree.

CPT Application & Approve Process
  • Step 1: Enroll and select the CPT course (1 Credit Hour = $540).

  • Step 2: Submit the CPT Request Form with supporting documents (Job Offer Letter, and the most recent I-94) to the Monroe College DSO via email.

*CPT approval can only be granted after the tuition fees have been fully paid.

** The beginning of each semester is the peak season for CPT applications. To avoid any potential delay, it is highly recommended to submit your application early, allowing for sufficient time for SEVIS Transfer or CPT application processing. The school's admissions team will process CPT applications within a few business days. However, if the application is submitted too late, there is no guarantee that you will be able to begin CPT on the first day of school.

  • Step 3: Renew CPT authorization each semester, as per Monroe College's regulations. To continue qualifying for CPT, students need to:
    • Fulfill On-Site Attendance Requirement
    • Keep a GPA of 3.0 or above
