Avila University
Avila University traces its roots back to 1916, when the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet founded St. Teresa’s College as a two-year institution for women. In 1930, it affiliated with St. Joseph Hospital’s School of Nursing, and by 1940 it had expanded into a four-year institution known as the College of St. Teresa. The school made history in 1948 by launching one of Kansas City’s first baccalaureate nursing programs (BSN). In 1963, it relocated to a larger campus in South Kansas City and adopted the name Avila College. Six years later, in 1969, the school became fully coeducational, and in 2002 it achieved university status, officially becoming Avila University.
