CPT Work Permit Eligibility and Criteria Explained

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) refers to short-term employment authorization for international students in the U.S. holding F-1 visas. It allows students to gain practical work experience directly related to their field of study while they pursue their degrees. CPT is a valuable opportunity for students to bridge their academic learning with hands-on training, but it comes with specific rules and eligibility requirements.

What Is a CPT Work Permit?

A CPT work permit enables international students to work in the U.S. as part of their academic curriculum. The employment must be directly related to the student's major and serve as an integral part of their degree program. CPT allows students to:

  • Gain valuable industry experience while studying.
  • Build a professional network within their field.
  • Increase their employability after graduation.

However, CPT employment is temporary and tied to the degree program, which means it must align with the curriculum and academic requirements.

Am I Eligible for a CPT Work Permit?

To qualify for CPT, students must meet the following criteria:

  1. Valid F-1 Visa Status
You must be enrolled in a certified institution that participates in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  2. Program Relevance
The work must be integral to your major and directly related to your field of study. CPT can either be:

    • A required part of your program.
    • An elective that offers academic credit.
  3. Enrollment Duration

    • Undergraduate Students: Must complete one academic year (two semesters) of full-time enrollment before becoming eligible for CPT.
    • Graduate Students: Exempt from the one-year enrollment rule if their program requires immediate internship participation.
  4. Designated School Official (DSO) Approval
Before starting CPT, you must receive approval from your school’s DSO. The DSO will provide you with an updated I-20 form authorizing CPT employment.

  5. Job Offer Requirement
CPT is employer-specific, meaning you must secure a job offer before applying. If you change employers, you will need to reapply and get approval for the new position.

Key Considerations for CPT

  • Employer-Specific: Unlike Optional Practical Training (OPT), CPT is tied to a specific employer and job role.
  • Part-Time vs. Full-Time:
    • Part-Time CPT: Less than 20 hours per week; does not affect OPT eligibility.
    • Full-Time CPT: Over 20 hours per week; using 12 months or more of full-time CPT may make you ineligible for OPT.
  • Temporary Authorization: CPT is not a long-term employment option and ends when you graduate or change your academic status.
