Day 1 CPT Universities: Holiday Re-Entry Guide in 2025

Day 1 CPT Universities: Holiday Re-Entry Guide in 2025
6:31

If you're studying at a Day 1 CPT university and planning to travel internationally during the holiday season, understanding what to expect during re-entry is crucial, especially given the recent shift in U.S. political views on immigration after the 2024 election. However, there's no need to worry too much. Immigration officers often have specific questions for students on F-1 visas and may ask additional questions about Curricular Practical Training (CPT). These questions are typically intended to confirm the purpose of your entry and ensure compliance with visa regulations. To help you prepare, we invited two of our students to share their recent experiences. One entered the U.S. through LAX while enrolled in an MBA program at Westcliff University and the other entered through JFK as a student at Goldey-Beacom College (GBC).

Essential Documents for Re-Entry

When returning to the U.S., the most important document you need is your I-20 with a valid travel signature. If you’re on CPT, your I-20 should include your employer details. This demonstrates that your CPT work is authorized and aligns with your academic program.

While the I-20 is usually sufficient, you may want to carry additional documents for extra assurance:

  • Transcripts: Show your academic progress.
  • Class Schedule: Indicates you are enrolled and actively studying.
  • Student ID: Validates your student status.
  • Tuition Payment Receipts: Confirms your enrollment.
  • Resume or Assignment Samples: Highlights your academic and professional work.

Both of the students who are sharing their experiences today said they carried all the above documents, but only their I-20s were requested during entry.

Student Sharing:

My Entry Experience at LAX (Westcliff Student)

I checked online and some people say entering through LAX can sometimes involve stricter checks compared to other ports of entry like JFK. It is hard to know if this is true, but anyway, here are the questions I was asked:

  1. Why are you coming to the U.S.?I answered, "To study."
  2. What program and major are you studying? What courses are you taking? Which class do you like the most? I answered accordingly and listed out the courses I was taking before taking the leave and the ones I enrolled in the coming semester. I said I liked one of the courses from last semester, and looking forward to another in the coming semester because (give some personal or market reason why these courses are helpful for me)
  3. What does your CPT employer do?The officer checked the details on my I-20.
  4. What are your plans after graduation?I said, "I want to work in marketing, especially in user growth," without specifying whether I’d stay in the U.S. or return home.
  5. Where will you be staying after entering the U.S.?

Entry Experience at JFK (GBC Student)

I entered through JFK while studying at Goldey-Beacom College, which I consider an "affordable version of Harrisburg University". These were the questions I had been asked at the border:

  1. Where will you be staying after entering the U.S.?
  2. What kind of work are you doing under CPT? Why did you choose this job? I'm pursuing an MBA in Finance. I further explained that my internship at Chase enhanced my practical experience in finance.
  3. When will you graduate?
  4. Are you carrying any cash with you?

That's all!

Tips for Smooth Re-Entry as a Day 1 CPT Student

  1. Ensure Your I-20 is Ready: Verify that your I-20 includes a valid travel signature and CPT employer information.
  2. Be Familiar with Your Courses: Immigration officers may ask about your program, courses, and how your CPT work relates to your field of study.
  3. Emphasize Your Student Role: When answering questions, highlight your academic goals and the purpose of your CPT as part of your curriculum.
  4. Try Not to Travel During the Semester: To avoid being scrutinized at the border, Day 1 CPT students should try not to travel during the semester while courses are going on unless there is an emergency back home. Traveling during the semester while classes are going on raises questions on whether your F-1 status is genius. Even though most Day 1 CPT universities have flexible studying schedule
  5. Prepare Additional Documents: Even if not required, having extra documents like transcripts and payment receipts can provide peace of mind.
  6. Stay Calm and Confident: Approach the process with confidence, answering questions clearly and politely.
  7. Come back before January 20th: Many schools issued travel warnings for their international students and urging them to come back to the US after the holiday season before January 20th in case the newly elected President Trump issues travel bans against students from certain countries like when he was in the office last time.
