Day 1 CPT: Why International Students Needs It

Day 1 CPT (Curricular Practical Training) is a distinctive feature offered by specific masters or doctoral programs in the US. Unlike traditional CPT guidelines where students might have to wait for up to a year before they can begin working, Day 1 CPT allows international students to start working in roles relevant to their field of study from the very first day they commence their academic program.

This provision was introduced to bridge the gap between academia and the real-world industry, enabling students to gain practical experience concurrently with their theoretical studies. Students can better contextualize their learning, gain industry-relevant skills, and even financially support themselves.

For universities, offering Day 1 CPT can make their programs more attractive to international students who might be weighing the pros and cons of studying abroad, especially considering the financial and experiential aspects. However, it's worth noting that not all universities offer this provision, and those that do might have varying guidelines and stipulations.

Furthermore, while the concept of Day 1 CPT is attractive, students must ensure they adhere strictly to the rules and regulations laid out by both the university and the USCIS to avoid any legal complications.

Who can apply for Day 1 CPT?

Day 1 CPT may be a good option for:

1. Students bypassed by the H1B lottery

International students on OPT or its extension can consider Day 1 CPT if they:

  • Can't find H1B sponsorships.

  • Were overlooked in the H1B lottery.

  • Are jobless or unsure about their future job prospects.

These students can work or job-hunt in the US from day one of their program.

2. Students with denied OPT

If their OPT application is denied, students lose their legal US status once their grace period ends. Day 1 CPT schools offer a solution by quickly processing admissions, enabling students to reinstate their student status in the US in a matter of days.

3. Students facing academic challenges or emergency transfers

Students who don't promptly transfer their SEVIS to maintain their legal status risk termination of that status. Day 1 CPT institutions can process admissions quickly, often in just a day or two, providing a safeguard against such status complications.

4. Recently laid-off employees

Did you get laid off and are looking for ways to transition your visa? If you can't land another job during their grace period, Day 1 CPT schools become an option. You can potentially maintain your visa status, study, and also look for new job opportunities.

5. Individuals with work permits (like H1b, H4 EAD, and L2 EAD)

Those on such permits might consider switching to F-1 status if they face visa issues. After changing to F-1, they can join Day 1 CPT programs to continue working in the US.

6. Overseas students wanting to work or study in the US

IT and Tech professionals who have US job offers but don't possess an H1b visa can join Day 1 CPT programs. This allows them to work full-time and study simultaneously, potentially paving the way for securing an H1b visa later on.

What are the steps to applying for Day 1 CPT?

1. Secure an offer letter.

Before you initiate the Day 1 CPT application, make sure you have an offer letter.

2. Complete the CPT application.

Register for relevant CPT courses early. Then, submit the CPT application form along with your offer letter and a CPT agreement signed by both the school and your employer.

Note that some schools might accept an employment verification letter or the offer letter in lieu of the CPT Agreement. CPT policies vary by institution.

3. Wait for CPT approval.

Once you've submitted your application, wait for your school to grant CPT approval. Upon approval, you'll receive a new I-20. Verify that the employer details on the second page of this I-20 are accurate. Start your job only after the effective date specified on the CPT I-20.

Note on renewing your CPT: As each semester concludes, monitor your school emails for information about CPT renewal. Submit a renewal application in advance for the upcoming semester or year (based on the university's policies).

Given the high volume of CPT applications usually seen 3-5 days before the starting date, you might experience delays in getting approval or receiving your I-20 during this window.

To avoid such issues, submit your CPT application at least two weeks early, ensuring you're ready to start work with the CPT I-20 from the semester's beginning.

How do you choose the right Day 1 CPT program for you?

As an international student aiming to blend academic knowledge with real-world experiences, finding the top Day 1 CPT programs becomes essential. But with so many offerings, how do you zero in on the best? Here are some factors to look at:

  • Accreditations and reputation - It's important to choose an accredited institution. Universities like Westcliff University, Harrisburg University, Trine University, and Monroe College are fully accredited institutions known for their top CPT programs and commitment to excellence. They are excellent choices for international students aiming for top-tier jobs and degrees.

  • Program details - The hallmark of the top Day 1 CPT programs is their alignment with current industry needs. Ensure that the program's curriculum is updated and integrates with the evolving demands of the corporate world. Which subjects are covered? Who are the faculty members? What facilities and resources are on offer? Picking the right program can significantly influence your academic and professional trajectory, equipping you with essential tools and specializations.

  • CPT and OPT policies - Different universities have their criteria and guidelines for CPT and OPT. Understanding these policies will help you gauge how much support the university offers during your professional transition. This includes aspects like job placements, paperwork, and renewal policies.

  • Location - The location of the university can impact your daily life. Will you be comfortable living there for the next few years? Is it conveniently located, or would it require extensive commutes? Consider the appeal of the state or city, as you'll be immersed in that environment for the duration of your program.
