Getting to know the application process for Day 1 CPT
· Check your eligibility
Not all students are eligible to apply for Day 1 CPT. You must maintain valid F-1 status to apply for Day 1 CPT and cannot be enrolled in an English language training program.
Students applying for Day 1 CPT must be enrolled in a graduate program that requires immediate participation in practical training as an integral part of the established curriculum. This allows eligible F-1 students to receive CPT authorization from the beginning of the program.
· Prepare the requirements
Are you eligible for the Day 1 CPT program? Then, it’s time to prepare your requirements and ensure that you don’t run into any delays during the application process.
In addition to being an integral part of your curriculum, your CPT employment must be directly related to your major area of study. For example, a Computer Science student should pursue a CPT position related to their academic field.
CPT application requirements vary by school, but students generally need a job offer letter and any CPT forms or agreements required by their university. Once CPT is approved, the DSO will issue an updated Form I-20 showing the CPT authorization.
You may begin CPT employment only after your DSO has authorized the CPT in SEVIS and the authorized CPT start date has arrived.
· Renew your application
Once your CPT is approved, check the expiration date on your CPT-authorized Form I-20. If you need to continue working beyond that date, follow your school’s CPT renewal or extension process before your current authorization expires. CPT renewal requirements and processing times vary by school.
