How Much Does Day 1 CPT Cost?

If we only talk about tuitions, normally:

  • For master's program it usually cost around $15,000 - $30,000 /program.
  • For doctoral program it usually cost around $50,000 /program

However, selecting the ideal university for your Day 1 CPT program involves more than just comparing tuition fees. While managing financial challenges is a significant concern for international students, and tuition costs are certainly a key factor, it's crucial to also consider elements like:

🔸 The university's location
🔸 Living expenses
🔸 The potential for USCIS scrutiny
🔸 Whether the program is a STEM program
🔸 How many additional H1B lottery chances you may have based on the duration of your Day 1 CPT program
🔸 If your company will provide compensation for studying at this particular Day 1 CPT universities.
🔸 ...
These aspects substantially influence the total cost and the value of your educational and professional journey. Keep reading, you'll find the breakdown of Day 1 CPT total cost and how to avoid the hidden fees. ⇣

Day 1 CPT Hidden Fees & Discounts

Finding the most cost-effective Day 1 CPT universities requires evaluating overall value, not just tuition. This includes considering factors like transportation, textbooks, processing fees, and the financial benefits of scholarships, referral bonuses, and Day 1 CPT employment income.

For a comprehensive evaluation, here's a checklist focusing on both "Day 1 CPT universities" and "Day 1 CPT Cost":

Cost & Fees

☑ Tuition Fees: Tuition for Day 1 CPT universities varies based on accreditation, program type, and location. Periodic promotions and scholarships may also impact costs. For the latest tuition information, visit our website or contact our consultants. Usually, a master's level program should cost you $15,000 - $30,000 /program for tuition only. If the price is way lower or way higher than this range, be aware.

☑  Commute and Accommodation: Most Day 1 CPT universities require few on-site visits to maintain legal status and CPT authorization. However, attending out-of-state schools can lead to significant costs for travel and accommodation. Since not all campuses offer every program, it's crucial to confirm your program's availability to avoid unnecessary travel expenses. We recommend consulting with our advisors or former students for accurate and current information.

☑ Textbook: Some universities may charge a separate fee for textbooks or online study materials, which may not be included in their advertised tuition costs. Students may only become aware of these additional fees after enrolling. On the other hand, universities like CIAM may include all costs in a "comprehensive fee," covering tuition, CPT processing fees, and even parking expenses.

☑ CPT Process Fees: Some schools may charge this fee after students have enrolled, which can be unexpected. We rely on feedback from our students to uncover these hidden costs. To support the international student community, we encourage you to report any additional fees you encounter, and we will share this information with our future students, as well as negotiate with the school on your behalf. Let's work together to create a supportive community that looks out for each other.

☑ Medical Insurance: Many of our students have secured fantastic internship opportunities where their employer covers their medical insurance costs. However, some of the schools they have chosen to attend may require them to purchase additional medical insurance, leading to extra expenses. Most Day 1 CPT universities do not mandate buying insurance from them, and there should be a way to waive it if you can provide proof of coverage, as per USCIS regulations for F1 students.

Potential Earnings or Discounts:

☑ Financial Aid and Scholarships: Some universities may have a higher tuition cost, but they also offer numerous scholarship opportunities. For instance, Westcliff University boasts a 60% chance of receiving a scholarship.

☑ Program Duration: Longer programs might offer better education and job readiness, also, more chances to enter the H1B lottery, potentially offering better value despite higher costs.

☑ Summer Vacations: Some Day 1 CPT universities allow a summer break where students can work through CPT without paying tuition. Although these programs might have higher total tuition, the cost spread over the program duration can lead to lower monthly expenses, offering a cost advantage over programs with continuous tuition but no summer earnings opportunity.

☑ Administrative Support: A frequent issue is the lack of post-enrollment support at some Day 1 CPT universities, particularly those with lower tuition. This shortfall in administrative assistance can hinder students' ability to apply for CPT timely. Higher tuition institutions often reinvest in comprehensive support, employing skilled instructors and staff to help with student inquiries and CPT applications.

We interviewed a former Day 1 CPT student who has successfully transitioned to H1B status. He shared his experiences studying at New England College and the University of the Cumberlands, both of which are featured on our "top 3 cheapest Day 1 CPT universities" list. Additionally, he has friends who attended Harrisburg University, a popular but more expensive option on the East Coast.

Top 3 Most Affordable Day 1 CPT Universities

Focusing solely on tuition, these institutions are often cited as the "most affordable Day 1 CPT universities."

Yet, feedback from our students reveals that the University of the Cumberlands and Campbellsville University include several "hidden costs" that emerge only after enrollment.

CPTDog has assisted numerous students in transferring out of these two universities. We believe it's our duty to share this information, ensuring you have a comprehensive understanding of the costs associated with Day 1 CPT before making your decision.

Cheapest Day 1 CPT Universities Near You

Location plays a crucial role in making your Day 1 CPT experience more affordable. While most Day 1 CPT programs require student attendance only once per semester, traveling across the state for school can significantly increase your costs, including commute and accommodation expenses.

For programs that require on-site attendance once a month, we strongly recommend choosing them only if you live nearby. Many of our students had to transfer from such schools because the transportation costs were unmanageable, and their employers were not supportive of the frequent days off needed to attend on-site classes.

*Note: The cost difference between two CPT schools can reach up to $9,000 for the entire program. When you factor in transportation and additional expenses, the variation can be even greater. Therefore, making the right choice could save you thousands of dollars. If your situation is complex, consider consulting with CPTDog's advisors. They can provide guidance or share experiences from others in similar situations to help you make an informed decision.

Day 1 CPT FAQ

We've compiled a list of frequently asked questions about using Day 1 CPT, addressing the most common inquiries from our students. We hope you find this resource helpful. If you have further questions, don't hesitate to reach out to our experts for a free consultation. We are committed to dismantling information barriers for international students, so feel free to ask any questions you may have.

What is Day 1 CPT?

"Day 1 CPT" is a term used by international students to describe graduate-level programs that enable them to use Curricular Practical Training (CPT) work authorization from the beginning of their studies. This allows F1 students to work while they study.

Is Day 1 CPT Legal?

USCIS guidelines confirm that Day 1 CPT is legal when required by academic programs, with DSOs determining eligibility. Universities must ensure their Day 1 CPT programs comply with USCIS regulations, making it crucial to select accredited and reputable institutions for legal work experience.

At the 2024 NAFSA conference, David Gluckman from McCandlish Holton explained Day 1 CPT to DSOs and admissions officers, highlighting its purpose and how to design such programs to attract international students.

UC Riverside, a ranked public school, launched its "Day 1 CPT" program in 2023 and uses the term "Day 1 CPT curriculum" on its website. The key issue is program design. Programs with inadequate on-site requirements are unsafe. Choosing reputable universities with proper accreditation and well-designed programs ensures you can enjoy work authorization without future USCIS scrutiny.

Who are Day 1 CPT for?

The primary users of Day 1 CPT are F1 students who failed to secure an H1B visa after their OPT. Some had internships and H1B sponsorships but weren't selected in the lottery, while others couldn't find employers or were laid off mid-internship. They need to maintain their legal and working status, which is where Day 1 CPT comes in.

Another significant group using Day 1 CPT includes those facing H1B layoffs and the end of their H1B grace period. Day 1 CPT universities help them maintain legal working status and enhance their industry knowledge, providing another employment opportunity.

Lastly, some users are dependents on H4 or F2 visas looking to gain work experience and support themselves financially. They prefer Day 1 CPT universities over traditional ones due to lower tuition and employment opportunities.

Why people are scared to use the term "Day 1 CPT"? Are "Day 1 CPT universities" shady?

"Day 1 CPT" is an informal term used mainly by international students. Schools avoid this term to prevent scrutiny from USCIS, which is concerned that programs focusing too much on internships may neglect academics and encourage F1 visa abuse.

Due to the outdated USCIS immigration system, obtaining an H1B visa is nearly impossible for many qualified applicants. Consequently, more public schools are offering internship-centric programs to meet market demands. Ultimately, education must enhance employment prospects.

However, the legitimacy and safety of a Day 1 CPT program depend on accreditation and program design. The Day 1 CPT universities recommended by CPTDog consultants are vetted and sometimes co-designed with immigration lawyers. All schools we work with are accredited and pass annual SEVP checks.

Turn around time: How fast can I get an offer or even I-20 if I applied to a Day 1 CPT university?

The processing time varies from 1 working day to 2 months, depending on your situation.

Why such a difference? For those outside the US, the review process takes longer. However, if you are already in the US with a valid SEVIS number, it only takes 1-7 working days when applying through CPTDog.

As official admission partners with the schools on our list, we are authorized to pre-review students' application materials, saving the admission officers a lot of time. This usually takes 3-7 working days. If you are in a rush and need a new I-20 to maintain your status in the US, contact us for our expedited service. Once matched with an appropriate school and program, you can obtain a new I-20 as quickly as the same day.

Will using Day 1 CPT affect my OPT after graduation?

Regardless of whether it is Day 1 or not, using full-time CPT for more than one academic year will make you ineligible for post-graduation OPT.

However, this is rarely a problem for our students. Based on our experience, most students needing Day 1 CPT programs already have a master's degree. OPT can only be used once for each degree level. If your Day 1 CPT program is your second master's program, you won't be eligible for OPT after graduation, regardless of how long you used full-time CPT during the program.

Part-time CPT, on the other hand, can be used for the duration of the program and won't affect your OPT application afterward.

Will Day 1 CPT affect my green card application in the future?

No.

Day 1 CPT is based on F1 status and is no different from your previous F1 status as long as you fulfill all USCIS requirements for F1 visa holders.

However, if you ever violate F1 visa requirements—such as failing to attend on-site classes as designed, not maintaining a certain GPA, or working without authorization—these records will show up in your future immigration applications and cause problems.

In short, the issue is not so much about using CPT or Day 1 CPT, but how well you have maintained your F1 status.

Will using Day 1 CPT increase the chance for H1B RFE?

If you have used CPT for an extended period, there is a chance that USCIS will issue an RFE (Request for Evidence) during your H1B application.

The reason is that, from USCIS's perspective, the primary reason for F1 students to stay in the US is to study, not to work. Therefore, they may request more evidence regarding your maintenance of F1 status. If you have maintained your F1 status throughout the program and your program is designed to incorporate CPT as part of the study, you should be fine. Accredited Day 1 CPT universities typically provide RFE support, and CPTDog also offers consultation for this.

Can I apply for green card while on Day 1 CPT? Yes, Day 1 CPT is a work authorization for F1 visa holders. Day 1 CPT does not affect green card processing.
How long can I use Day 1 CPT?

The short answer is: as long as the program lasts.

If you plan to apply for OPT after graduation, limit your full-time CPT usage to less than 12 months; otherwise, you will be ineligible for post-graduation OPT. Part-time CPT does not affect your post-graduation OPT application.

However, if your current Day 1 CPT program is at the same academic level as your previous degree for which you've already used OPT, it won't matter since you can only use OPT once per level of study.

Can I work 40 hours a week on Day 1 CPT?

You can work either full-time or part-time through CPT work authorization.

CPT requires a signed cooperative agreement or a letter from your employer.

If you use full-time CPT more than 11 months throughout the program, you will not be eligible for OPT post-graduation.

Can I work outside of the U.S. while using Day 1 CPT?

Yes, the government has given temporary regulations stating that students may work remotely (even from abroad) with CPT authorization.

However, F-1 students can not study any program fully online, you have to attend onsite courses in the US throughout the semester.

Do I need an EAD card while using Day 1 CPT? NO. An EAD card is not required for CPT. The Day 1 CPT university will issue you I-20s with CPT instead.
Can I travel back to India while using Day 1 CPT?

Yes, the travel rules for Day 1 CPT students returning to their home country are the same as for any F-1 students:

  1. Ensure you have a valid F-1 Visa in your passport.
  2. Carry your I-20 form, which includes CPT details.
  3. Have your course syllabus on hand.
  4. Bring evidence of your employment.
  5. Keep your DSO's phone number handy for additional assistance at customs.
What universities in Texas offer Day 1 CPT
Although Texas boasts a large number of international students, it doesn't offer many options for Day 1 CPT.

The University of the Cumberlands has a campus about 20 minutes from Dallas that offers Day 1 CPT.

Texas Wesleyan University will start offering Day 1 CPT programs in Spring 2025.

Due to the flexible schedule of Day 1 CPT programs, many of our students in Texas choose to come to California. Westcliff University currently hosts the largest number of students from Texas in California. If this is your first master's degree and you wish to enter the H1B Master Cap to boost your chances of being selected, you'll need to opt for a non-profit Day 1 CPT university. In that case, CIAM near LA is a good choice.

Can I get Day 1 CPT for a second Master's? Yes, once you are enrolled on a full-time student visa you are eligible for CPT. Day 1 CPT eligibility will be specific to the programs you enrolled in.
What is the 150-day rule?

If you are a student who transfer the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) from the previous school to the new school, the first day of the new school needs to be within 150 days of the end date of the previous program (specified on the first page of I-20) or the OPT expiration date; otherwise, the school can only issue a new I-20. You are required to activate the I20 by traveling outside the US and entering again.

When transferring SEVIS, make sure your new program starts within 150 days of the end date of your previous program or the OPT expiration date. Otherwise you are required to activate the I20 by traveling outside the US and reenter.

What is the 60-day rule? To transfer your SEVIS to a new school, you need an acceptance letter and must apply within 60 days of graduation or your OPT expiration date. Otherwise, your SEVIS status will become inactive, thus transferring won't be possible.
Can I enroll after the program has started? Yes! CPTDog partner schools allow you to enroll even after the semester has started. There are up to 6 enrollment periods during the year. Contact us for an emergency transfer!
What are the well-known companies that sponsor H1b visas for Day 1 CPT employees?

Affirm, Adobe, Bloomberg, Barclays, BOA, Box, Citi, Doordash, Google, IBM, JP Morgan, Matterport, Microsoft, Okta, Oracle, Walmartlabs, WeWork, and more.

Please see a list of 200 employers who hired part-time CPT or full-time CPT employees in 2019. All of these employers support full-time CPT authorization.

Attachment: USCIS official list of employers allowed to hire CPT employees

Can I change employers/jobs during CPT? Yes! But remember to contact your school in advance and update your employer info in the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) within 10 days of any employment change.
If I am selected for H1b, can I drop out of school? If so, how?

Yes! You can drop out of school after being selected for the H1b visa. It is recommended to finish the semester with grades reported on the transcript until the H1b takes effect.

You can contact your university's academic advisor if you need to drop out immediately.

Is there a gap while transferring OPT to CPT? Can I continue working?

Yes, there will be a short gap and you can’t continue working during the gap.

OPT as soon as SEVIS is transferred out of the original school. You can restart working after obtaining the new CPT I-20 from the new school. To start working on the first day, we recommend that you start your CPT application as soon as possible after receiving the school's acceptance letter and ideally two weeks before the school starts.

Because the school demands time and efforts to carry out CPT applications, applying near the deadline could result in CPT I-20 delays. It's possible that this delay could lead to the student unable to start work with CPT on the first-week class.

After receiving the CPT applications, it normally takes the school 3-5 days to process the SEVIS transfer and approve the CPT application. Please start working only after the CPT has been approved. If there is a gap, it is better to take a few days off and keep a record of the day-offs (Do Not including these days on pay stub) in case the USCIS requests RFE to prove that you did not work without authorization.

When can I start applying for CPT?

You can apply for CPT 2-3 weeks before school starts after receiving the school's acceptance letter or successfully transferring SEVIS. If you miss the deadline, for some Day 1 CPT universities, you may have another chance to apply for CPT during the semester.

Can I take more than one job while using Day 1 CPT?

Certainly! Some students may choose to pursue internships with multiple employers, which can enhance their chances of securing H1B sponsorship in the future. Internship experiences play a vital role in the search for H1B sponsorship. Day 1 CPT programs, with its focus on real-world work opportunities, assists international students in securing better job prospects post-graduation.

However, it is advisable not to exceed 40 hours of work per week to avoid raising questions about F1 status maintenance. CPT serves as a valuable benefit for F1 students, but it requires students to maintain full-time status. Spending excessive time working while on H1B status may result in inquiries from USCIS that could potentially lead to a denial of H1B application in the future.

What is the minimal on-site requirement for F1 students?

There are no clear requirements from USCIS regarding the exact number of hours you must spend on-site. The regulation only mentions "some hours." However, you still need to pass the "smell test," meaning USCIS must believe you are spending more time on courses than on your internship. Therefore, it's best to avoid programs with minimal on-site requirements. Some schools only require students to be on-site once per semester and allow them to take the summer off, meaning you might only need to go to campus once every six months. While this is very work-friendly and technically within regulations, it seems risky to join such programs.
