Day 1 CPT Plan B for H1B selection | CPTDog

Written by Ryan Zhang | Jul 7, 2023 7:00:00 AM

Previously, I have introduced Day-1 CPT as a Plan B strategy for those who didn't get selected in the H1B lottery. I also shared some of my research on CPT schools and policies with everyone. In today's article, I will use concise language to help you find the most suitable CPT school and program for you within three minutes!

Day 1 CPT University Selection

You must choose a legitimate and accredited school! Additionally, it is advisable to prioritize schools with a long history, high regional recognition, or those of a religious nature. By selecting an accredited school, you can reduce the risk of receiving a Request for Evidence (RFE) for your subsequent H1B or green card applications.

A logical study plan

If you have already completed a master's degree, it would be reasonable to pursue an Day 1 CPT MBA or a higher-level doctoral program.

However, it is crucial to avoid selecting a Day 1 CPT program that closely resembles your existing degree (e.g., pursuing an MS in Data Analytics when you already have an MS in Data Science). Otherwise, you may become a target for Request for Evidence (RFE) from the immigration authorities. Additionally, it is important to ensure that your chosen field of study is relevant to your current job. This will increase the likelihood of your CPT application being approved.

Here are some common doctoral CPT programs:

Other Factors to Consider

During your Day 1 CPT period, it is crucial to adhere to the school's regulations, attend classes punctually, submit assignments on time, and strive to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or above. Failure to comply with these requirements may result in termination of your CPT and even possible revocation of your F1 visa. To balance your studies, work, and personal life, all of the aforementioned factors are highly important.

  • Transportation convenience: It is advisable to prioritize schools that are conveniently located to minimize commuting time.

  • Frequency of onsite classes: Different schools have varying requirements for onsite attendance. Some may require monthly onsite visits, while others may only require one onsite visit per semester. See the full comparison in here

  • CPT update frequency: Updating CPT requires coordination with your company or supervisor. If it can be done once a year, it would be ideal.

  • Academic workload: Excessive academic pressure that negatively affects your GPA may result in the need to transfer schools. Additionally, we have developed a course selection guide system to help you navigate the process and avoid potential pitfalls, see details in our Day 1 CPT University pages.

These are the three fundamental principles to follow when selecting schools and programs for CPT! In addition, there are a few other points to consider during the school selection process, as they may impact your future development.

  1. If the CPT program you will be attending is your first master's degree or higher program in the United States, it is advisable to choose a non-profit university.

    1. Having a graduate degree from a non-profit university increases your chances of being selected in the H1B lottery, as you are eligible for an additional 20,000 slots reserved for individuals with advanced degrees, on top of the regular 65,000 slots.

    2. Non-profit private universities in the western region, such as Humphreys University, or in the eastern region, such as Harrisburg University, New England College, and Saint Peter's University, are good options.

  2. If you have not utilized OPT during your previous graduate studies, it is recommended to select a STEM-certified program for your Day 1 CPT. This way, if you use Full-time CPT (working over 20 hours per week) for less than 365 days, you will still be eligible for a 3-year OPT period after graduation.

  3. If you plan to return to your home country for future development and require degree certification, it is advisable to choose a school listed in the database of U.S. universities recognized by the country’s education center. Most Day-1 CPT schools are included in this list.

  4. For those working in companies that support CPT but do not sign CPT agreements (such as Google or Amazon), it is important to consider whether the school can waive the CPT agreement requirement. Some schools strictly require CPT agreements, while others handle it on a case-by-case basis and may waive the requirement with an Employment Letter or other supporting documents.
