The process changed substantially in 2025–2026. Applicants now use the upgraded Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP 2.0), and uploading the required photograph and signature online is mandatory. To renew or reissue an Indian passport in the USA, first complete the Government of India passport application, select the correct consular jurisdiction, and upload the required photograph and signature. Then complete the VFS Global registration, prepare the documents listed in the applicable VFS checklist, pay the fees, and submit the physical application package to VFS.
For a standard adult 36-page passport, the current listed total is $146: $125 passport fee + $2 ICWF contribution + $19 VFS service fee. A standard adult 60-page passport totals $196. Card payments are subject to an additional 3.75% convenience charge.

You can still apply for re-issue if your Indian passport has already expired. If it expired more than three years ago, expect fresh police verification in India, which can increase the processing time. Applicants in this situation should make sure the Indian address, police station, district and contact information entered in the application are accurate so the verification can be completed without unnecessary delays.
Student tip: If you are studying in the U.S., you do not necessarily have to wait until your passport has less than one year remaining. Current Indian consulate guidance allows students to apply for re-issue within two years of the passport’s expiry date.
Indian passport applications in the United States are submitted through VFS Global and processed under the jurisdiction of the Indian Embassy or Consulate responsible for your U.S. residential address. Do not mail your application using an address copied from an older guide. Confirm the current VFS address and jurisdiction immediately before submitting your package.

Important: Under the upgraded Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP 2.0), applicants must upload an ICAO-compliant digital photograph and scanned signature while completing the Government application. Official Indian consular guidance also instructs applicants to upload the required supporting documents before submitting the physical application to VFS. Applications submitted without the required photo and signature upload can be returned unprocessed.
After submitting the Government application, save your Application Reference Number (ARN) and print the completed application form. You will need the ARN when continuing the process with VFS Global.
Check the form carefully before submitting it. Once the Government application has been submitted online, VFS cannot edit it for you. If you discover an error after submission, you may need to complete a new Government application.

Once your Government application and documents are ready, create an account or sign in to the VFS Global website. Your Government Application Reference Number (ARN) is used to connect the passport application with your VFS submission.

After VFS receives and reviews your application, you can track its status through the official VFS tracking system using your Government reference number/ARN (or applicable application ID) and date of birth.
Your status may not appear immediately after delivery. VFS says it can take up to 6–7 working days for an application to be reviewed and entered into its tracking system.
